Tortoise or the Hare
Tortoise or the Hare. When it comes to large projects, some people are more tortoise and some more hare. Sprint or marathon.
It takes perseverance to maintain momentum when working on large, usually long-term, projects. People frequently comment that it must take patience to finish making a quilt because of the time commitment. I would say the opposite it true. It takes a certain amount of IMPATIENCE and anticipation to make it to the finish line of a long-term project.
I consider myself a “hare”. And it has shown up in several aspects of my life. I handle long term projects well. My first career was as an accountant. Studying for the CPA exam definitely required perseverance to study over 6 months or so. There is no overnight cramming for that exam….trust me. After I got that project done, I decided to switch careers to become a commercial real estate appraiser. Before state licensure was in place, it was critical to obtain a credential called Member, Appraisal Institute (MAI) to gain any respect and decent assignments. To obtain the MAI, it took a minimum of a 5 year apprenticeship, 8 classes, plus writing a thesis on a commercial property. This was definitely a marathon.
Speaking of marathons, back when I was a runner, I wasn’t exactly the fastest runner but I could hang in there for distances. After months and months of training, I completed 2 full marathons….yes, that is 26.2 miles and I did it twice. I am still amazed that I did it.
Working on textile art, it takes longer than most other art mediums. And to top it off, I love hand-stitching…the slowest of the slow. So far, I have completed 3 pieces with hand stitching and I am on the finish line of the 4th piece.
I love the feeling of completing a project I have been working on for week/months. The feeling of accomplishment just can’t be beat. In many ways, it reminds me that I can count on myself to do what is needed to be done. If I can work for months on an art project that is’t going to end world hunger, I know I can trust myself to hang in there for projects that have more significant or practical results. Connections #9 is on the finish line. Hand-stitching is done; it has been steamed and it is drying waiting for the edges to be finished.
So, which are you? The tortoise or the hare?
