My New “Office”
Trying something new. I recently learned that heading out to a location outside your home/office is a terrific way to get more accomplished. It even has a name…“the coffee house effect”.
The theory is that removing yourself from your normal venue helps to remove distractions. Picking a location without WIFI is even better forcing you to working offline to avoid sneaking a peak to Facebook or Instagram is really upping the ante.
I thought I would give it a whirl on a Sunday morning. I have one tiny problem. I don’t drink coffee. The typical Starbucks doesn’t appeal to me because I am a hard-core Diet Coke addict. Instead, off to an Einstein’s Bagels I went.
My plan is to write several blog article drafts in one session. The goals it to just do a brain dump of the first draft and then let it sit for 24 hours or more to do another edit.
The location I picked is probably a bit TOO noisy. Lots of kids. And quite a lot of chatter. I may need to find a location where it is OK to sit at length that serves Diet Coke but it a tad quieter. That being said, I am still getting quite a bit done even with the distractions. Because they are different distractions and only take my mind away for a second or two. It’s not like I can get up to do a load of laundry.
