And Even More Cookies!

Last time I mentioned that one of my favorite comments at the opening reception was from a little boy who said “The Cookies Match the Art”. This past weekend, I had the honor and privilege to give an Artist Talk to Girl Scout Troupe 6814 from McKinney, TX who came to view the show. Two boxes of Thin Mints were my reward…..not that I needed one. Just speaking to this group was rewarding enough.

Abigail shares why Connections #17 is her favorite.

I opened up by introducing myself and explaining that my art is with fabric and not with paint. I asked each of the girls to view the show and select a piece that is their personal favorite. I also requested they not share their selection so they would not be influenced by each other’s choices. Then I asked them for their thoughts on WHY they selected that particular piece. Here, Abigail shares her reasons why Connections #17 is her favorite in the show.

Each girl had very different reasons for their selections and their observations were amazing. Just a few of the reasons they shared were: the crazy lines, the ripply texture, the peaceful feeling, and that there was a feeling of a surprise coming. One girl thought the design was like looking through a window.

I also had some really mature questions. Why was the art only in black and white (loved this question)? How do I get the small puffy areas in the white areas? Why do I like to stitch? Are THEY old enough to make an art quilt? How long does it take me to make one (people of all ages ask me that one)?

With all this interest, we are planning a day where they can make mini-art quilts. I mentioned that I had tons of color fabric they can use but one of the girls said “I want to make mine in black and white”. Be still my heart!

I don’t know who had more fun….Troupe 6814 or me.
